Animal rescues in north-central Florida say dog surrender requests are far outpacing adoptions while a contagious outbreak limits shelter capacity. WCJB reported on October 13, 2026, that Alachua County Animal Services has been under quarantine since the prior Thursday after multiple cases of “zoo strep” were identified, with no announced date for a full return to normal operations.
According to the station, adoptions and foster services for cats have resumed at Alachua County Animal Services, but the dog side of the system remains constrained. A reporter contacted five area animal organizations; four were at capacity. Williston Animal Group was the only one not full—yet workers there still described a flood of surrender calls.
Theresa Ridinger, treasurer of Williston Animal Group, said financial hardship is driving many of the requests. “For every adoption request we get we’re getting six to seven surrender requests,” she told WCJB, describing significantly more people who can no longer care for their dogs.
Why “zoo strep” raises the stakes
Shelter officials urged owners of sick dogs to keep those animals away from other pets. Ridinger described the disease as highly contagious in contained settings where dogs are close together, and especially risky for immunocompromised animals. She advised that dog parks are “probably not a good idea” for the moment.
With Alachua County’s timeline unclear, local rescue workers are asking the public to foster or adopt if they can. Ridinger said the need is urgent. Alachua County Animal Resources remains open for owners reclaiming lost pets, and officers continue to respond to public-safety concerns and animal emergencies, the report stated.
What it means for pet owners
Quarantines for contagious disease can quickly turn a regional capacity squeeze into a crisis for surrounding rescues. If your household can foster temporarily, that may free space for dogs that have nowhere else to go. If you already have a dog showing illness signs, call your veterinarian and avoid shared play areas until you know it is safe.
Communities under strain also need long-term homes, not only emergency stopgaps. Families preparing to welcome a dog can start with practical planning and a name search on our dog name generator or Golden Retriever names list once the hard work of adoption paperwork is done.
Supporting local groups with donations of supplies, volunteering, or sharing adoptable pets online can help while shelters work through outbreaks and backlog.
